We have stumbled into an amazing learning experience. Had to come all the way to Israel to find out there is a terrific Australian innovation called "permaculture" - a design system called "permaculture" that brilliantly integrates many strands of thought and practice in ecology and agriculture. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permaculture.
Also for urban dwellers and we will be taking many ideas home... though I fear we may have to tear down 7 Huntley Street to make way for Arron's 1. solar oven 2. organic veggie garden 3. hanging garden 4. compost heap and 5. recycling / kept garbage pile.
First picture is a mud wall we built using garbage for the structure -- broken plastic buckets packed with other rubbish. Here we have finished 2 layers of buckets, and the wall will probably be 4 layers high. The objective is to shield the window behind it from glaring mid-afternoon sun. We hope to finish the wall tomorrow or the next day.
Second picture is at the end of a hike up to "The Bunker" - a small mountaintop overlooking the kibbutz, where there is an abandoned bunker that the army used to use to watch the Jordanian border. Now abandoned thanks to peace accord. The sign shows the proximity of the border crossing to Egypt (Taba) and Jordan (Yitzhak Rabin).
After adding photos the order has changed. Those mentioned above are now the last two. The food is a typical Kibutz offering- stuffed capsy, fish, eggplant dippy thing.. Note the mound of Houmoss on the right of plate. The pool is our sanctuary every afternoon as it gets to 43 celcius here. Sand dunes behind Kibbutz. Repairing mud walls. Lunch with Snakeo in a bunker. Samantha's new friend Na'ama going head to head...
nice updates....oh dear dread the on-going stories for years to come re permi and walls made out of buckets.....and hoummy.....the best ever..life changing
Hi Elinor (and family!), Wow, you are building a wall! Lily wants to know if you are near the Dead Sea. Saskia says that Jake has grown up lots since she saw him last. Axel and Lucy O want to know how many more days until you come back.
Amelie is leaving our class, too. She is moving to America.
We miss you and good luck for the rest of your trip.
From JSC - Saskia, Amelie, Julian, Tom, Lucy O, Axel, Charlie, Spencer, Callum, Harry, Blaize, Lucas, Lucy D, Lily, Bethany and Mr Mac.
The wall is made out of rubbish, mad and straw and mud glue. Hi Lily, yes we are going to the Dead Sea in two weeks. Hi Saskia, Jake just had a haircut which made him look older. Axel and Lucy O, we are back in about 4 months in October which is the start of term 4. GOODBYE AMELIE!!!! Where are you going to in America? Which city?
I fell off my bike that I was learning to ride. It hurt so much.
We learned how to play a card game called 'SET'. Can anyone play 'SET'?
Having the best birthday. Loads of cakes and looking forward to the wine tonight. Have not really had a drink in a month! If only the world cup would start then all would be complete. Received a mud vase for my birthday from the family. Do not think it will make it through customs. Also not sure what will happen once we put water in it!

No Turkish flotillas in the sand dunes.

That word was supposed to be MUD, not Mad.
